Types of mass Media

There are many types of mass media. Mass media includes Print Media, Electronic Media, and New Age Media.

Print Media for example includes newspapers, books, magazines, billboards, flyers, and so on. Print media covers mass communication through printed materials like the examples given above. Newspapers carry different kinds of communication related to topics like politics, socialism, current affairs, entertainment, etc. Books are a major mass communication since they have a large reader base. Magazines are a third type of common print media. Magazines advertise current affairs, business, consumers, gadgets, fashion, lifestyle, etc. Many magazines are mainly persuasive and can be weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly depending on how long you choose to subscribe. Billboards are another way to advertise around a city or state. Billboards tend to be bright colors, eye catching, creative, and bold. Billboards started off by hand printing and now they have advanced to video and graphic cutouts that hang off of the board. Billboards help companies because well known and better recognized. Lastly, flyers are sort of like billboards in a way because they are also made for advertising and getting the word out. However, the difference between a billboard and a flyer is that a flyer is handheld and printed on a small piece of paper. They are usually handed out to passers on the street for restaurants, hotels, political campaigns, concerts, etc.

Electronic Media includes things like radio and television. Radio reaches a significant number of people. Americans listen to the radio on their way to and from work and whenever they get in their car to run an errand or two. People are ALWAYS listening to the radio. Radio is used to advertise companies, people, and events with catchy tunes and phrases and radio allows people to dial-in programs that give listeners the opportunity to feature on radio. These are both forms of mass communication. Although radio became less popular when television came out, it is still one of the favorite means of electronic media. Television on the other hand gets the audiences attention by the auditory and visual senses. Television has become like most communications an advertising place where advertisers spend large amounts of money for a few seconds on TV. Television offers a range of different programs for all types of age groups starting from little children to adults. It is almost impossible for some to imagine life with television because it is watched on a daily basis.
